He and his family moved to Topeka in 1951, where he worked for the state insurance department until 1953. He worked for Security Benefit Life Insurance from 1953 to his retirement in 1985 as senior vice-president. He was active at his church, Central Presbyterian Church, serving in many capacities, teacher, elder, choir member. He was also active in Downtown Optimist Club and Capper Foundation. He served as a pilot in the Army Air Corps in the Pacific during WWII.
