Robert E. Mitchell, 93, of Topeka, passed away on Friday, January 27, 2012 at the Kansas City Hospice House. He was born October 20, 1918 in Topeka, the son of Edward and Dorothy Switzer Mitchell.

He graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1936 in Chicago, IL, and attended Washburn University. A WWII veteran, he enlisted in 1942 and served the Army Air Corps on Tinian Island from 1944-46. Robert was employed by the Santa Fe Railroad for many years before retiring. He was a member of the Highland Park United Methodist Church and the Tecumseh Kiwanis Club. He was also an active volunteer for the Topeka Public Library.

Robert married Lois M. Simmons on April 3, 1948 in Topeka. She preceded him in death on October 31, 2008. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Jane McFarland in December, 2011.

Survivors include two sons, Bob C. (Nancy) Mitchell of Olathe, Tom O. (Joi Hoffsommer) Mitchell of Champaign, IL, five grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren and his sister, Marty Berry of Illinois.

Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday at the Highland Park United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Topeka Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to service time at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the Topeka Rescue Mission, 600 N. Kansas Ave., Topeka, KS 66608. Penwell-Gabel Southeast Chapel is assisting the family.
