Robert Mitsch Volkman, 85, long-time resident of Woodbine, died Friday, Sept. 7, 2007 at Overbrook Manor, Overbrook, Kansas.
He was born Nov. 15, 1921 in Herington, the son of Arthur and Alice Mitsch Volkman. He graduated from Woodbine High School in 1939, and lived there until moving to Topeka in January, 2005 and to Overbrook in October, 2006.
Mr. Volkman worked as an electrician for Beech Aircraft for 10 years and at Ft. Riley for over 30 years. He served in the US Army from 1940-1945, and was a Pearl Harbor survivor. He was a member of the VFW at Herington, and formerly served as President of the school board at Woodbine.
He married Agnes McDonald in 1948. She survives.
Other survivors include his children, Judith Volkman of Denver, CO, Linda Corey and husband, Alan, of Overland Park, Barry Volkman of Overbrook, Gregory Volkman of The Dalles, OR; a daughter-in-law, Merrilyn Volkman of Melvern; a sister, Mary Jane Hall of Butte, MT; six grandchildren, Micheal and Jeremy Volkman, Ryan Corey, Andrea Scott, Melanie Sims, and Carrie Volkman-Garcia; six great-grandchildren, Samantha and Chloe Volkman, Owen and Natalie Corey, and Madaline and Lauren Volkman.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Robert "Wayne" Volkman, a brother, Jack Volkman, and a sister, Roselyn Farres.
Cremation is planned. Memorial services are pending. Memorial contributions may be made to Woodbine United Methodist Church or to the organization of the donor's choice.
