Robert F. Tindall, Jr., 82, Topeka, passed away Tuesday, April 22, 2008 at his home.
Robert was born Sept. 4, 1925, at St. Joseph, MO, the son of Robert F. Tindall, Sr. and Virginia Pearl Fenton Tindall.
He was a graduate of Benton High School in St. Joseph; St. Joseph Junior College, now Missouri Western in St. Joseph, MO; Missouri School of Mines, now Missouri University at Rolla, MO earning his Bachelor's and Master Degree's in Civil Engineering.
He was a registered Civil Engineer and Land Surveyor. He had worked for the U.S. Geological Survey at Rolla, MO; the Indiana Flood Control and Water Resources Commission and the Indiana State Highway Commission at Indianapolis, IN. He also worked for the Federal Housing Administration, now the Dept. of Housing and Urban Development as a Regional Civil (Site) Engineer and the U.S. Corps of Engineers. He was a member of several professional societies: N.S.P.E; S.A.M.E.; K.E.S. and A.S.C.E.
He participated in WWII as an enlisted man in the 12th Marines Artillery of the 3rd Marine Division. He was a survivor of Iwo Jima. He was Commissioned as an Officer through the R.O.T.C. program and held many leadership positions ending as a Commandant 5047th USAR School in Topeka, KS. He had graduated from several Officer basic courses; the Command and General Staff Officers Course, Ft. Leavenworth, KS; The National Security Management Course, Ft. McNair, Washington, D.C. and the Army War College, Carlisle Barracks, PA. He had been selected as Commandant, 5047th USAR School under both 5th and 6th U.S. Armies. He served on the Topeka USD 501 Board of Education for one four(4) year term. He was a member of the Capital Post #1 of American Legion VFW Post #15017; Survivors of Iwo Jima, 3rd Marine Division Association; the Military Order of the World Wars, Association of the United States Army Topeka Chapter 553; the Retired Officers Association; Kaw Valley Chapter of Topeka; Reserve Officers Association of the United States, Kansas Department, and the Topeka Chapter #26; the National Association of Retired Federal Employees and A.A.R.P.
He was a former member of the West Side Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) having held many positions of leadership such as Chairman of the Board; Moderator and Elder. He was a member of the Southwest Baptist Church where he held the position as Moderator, Topeka, KS.
He was married to Lorene Kathryn Beger, August 5, 1948. She and their first son, Robert III preceded him in death. He married Ethel Roberta Berry on July 2, 1992, they were divorced. He married Hazel Pauline Smith on Sept. 7, 1997. She survives.
He is survived by three sons, Wayne E. (Carolyn) Tindall; David E. Tindall, and Karl T. Tindall, all of Topeka; one step-son, Ronald E.(Diane) Smith, Tonganoxie, KS; two step daughters, Catherine L. (Ed) Olsen of Topeka, KS and Marlena J. (Terry) Baldwin of Columbia, S.C.; 8 grandchildren; 12 step-grandchildren; 7 step great grandsons and 7 step great granddaughters.
Memorial services will be held at 2:00 PM on Friday, April 25, 2008, at West Side Christian Church, 432 SW Lindenwood Ave., Topeka, KS 66606. Inurnment will be at 2:00 PM Sat., April 26 in Ashland Cemetery, St. Joseph, MO. Military Honors provided by Missouri Funeral Honors Program.
