Roberta Pearl Reeves (daughter of Roy and Leta Hutchison), age 90 Olathe, Ks and formerly from Topeka, passed away Tuesday, December 8, 2015. Roberta left her earthly life to live in graces with her Heavenly Father. She lived her faith and left a legacy to her family and friends of love for God and others, the gift of generosity, the wonder of books and learning and the joy of listening and making music of all genre's but especially Gospel, classics and showtunes.
Roberta was born on a family farm outside of Soldier, KS where she spent her youth working on either her grandparent's farm or on her father's family homestead near Bethany, MO.
Roberta grew up with 2 sisters, the late Juanita Whiteside and Evelyn Russell of Des Moines, IA. She graduated from Soldier High School with her beloved brother, Virgil Hutchison, who lost his life while serving in the Navy in one of the worst Naval battles in the Philippine Islands.
Asked what her favorite toys were as a child, she immediately said, "A book in my hand and a kitty in my lap." Kitties were always a part of her life and caused her granddaughters to name her Grandma Kitty.
Roberta was an accomplished pianist and shared her talent and love of music with her children: Karen Carson (husband Al Moore) Udall, KS; Robert Carson Topeka, KS and Rodney Carson (wife Jane) Overland Park, KS.
Her childhood love of reading continued into her adulthood both for fun and learning. She never stopped wanting to learn more about everything. For many years she shared her knowledge of the Scriptures with fifth graders at the First Baptist Church in Topeka. She was a long time member of the church.
Roberta worked for KS Blue Cross Blue Shield for over 25 years. For a number of years she continued to meet with other retirees in their regular meetings. Her retirement opened the opportunity for her and her late husband, Logan Marcus Reeves, to travel extensively throughout the world. One of their favorite destinations was the mountains of Colorado as they both enjoyed hiking and being in the beautiful outdoor scenery.
One of the greatest joys of her life was her 6 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren: Christopher Shuman and his daughter Kayla, Topeka, KS; David Shuman (wife Elizabeth) and their children Ethan, Easton and Elektra, Topeka, KS; Amy Flagg (husband Adam) and their fur babies, Topeka, KS; Michele Carson Fritz and her children Nathan, Emily, Maddox and Hailie, Mishawaka, IN; Danielle Carson-Peronto (husband Shawn) and daughter Kate, Lawrence, KS; Step granddaughter Amy Hays (husband Jeremy) and their children Emma and Cole, Olathe, KS.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, December 11, 2015 at Mount Hope Chapel, Topeka. Burial will follow in Mount Hope Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the chapel 1 hour prior to the service.
