Roger L. Ginavan, 88, Topeka, passed away Tuesday, February 15, 2022.
Roger was born June 29, 1933 in Goodman, MO, the son of Robert and Winona (Britton) Ginavan. The love of family started early, being the third of four ornery boys. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Robert, Don and Duane.
He graduated from Topeka High School in 1951 and received a Bachelor's degree from Washburn University in 1955 and a Master's degree from Emporia State Teachers College in 1962.
Roger's love of sports led to him playing basketball, baseball and football at Topeka High
School and then went on to play football for 4 years at Washburn University.
He taught math and coached basketball, football and track in USD-501. He later was a counselor with USD-501, retiring in 1993, having taught at Topeka High School, East Topeka Junior High, Topeka West High School, and Highland Park High School ending his teaching career at the Hope Street Academy where he loved to rock babies during his lunch hour. Even after retiring in 1993, continued to rock babies for several more years.
Prior to teaching, he served in the U.S. Marine Corps, obtaining the rank of Major and retiring as a Reservist after 23 years.
During his life he was active at Central Park Christian Church, Highland Park Christian Church and was currently a member of West Side Christian Church. For the past 55 years he taught Sunday school and served his Lord throughout his life.
Roger married Jacqueline Marie Brooks on December 28, 1952. She died July 31, 1993.
He married La Ange (Boggs) Gordon on November 7, 1996. She survives. Other survivors include his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Surviving children are: Janet Ginavan (Phil), Robert Ginavan (Barbie), Michael Ginavan (Sandy), Angela Flohrschutz (Rusty), James Ginavan (Valerie), Debra Gordon (Ken), Keum Um, Baili Zhang and Dr. Nan Sun. Grand children are: Clint Osler (Beth), Ryan Anson (Tori), Connor Anson (Morgan), Tyler Ginavan, Kelsi Kennedy (Cody), Kyson Ginavan (Alyssa), Tanner Ginavan (Emily), Scott Droddy (Michelle), Andrea Orton (Lucas), Coralee Ginavan, TJ Greco, Rhys Kaba, Austin Flohrschutz, Dylan Flohrschutz, Melissa Ginavan, Nicolas Ginavan, Benjamin Zhang, David Kim and Jane Lee. Great Grandchildren include: Lily Anson, Kenna and Kaylee Kennedy, Davis Ginavan, Willow Ginavan, Lincoln and London Droddy, and Kylen Ginavan.
Cremation has taken place and a Memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, February 22, 2022 at West Side Christian Church. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service at 10:00 a.m.
Roger loved children and his country therefore memorial contributions can be made to The Major Roger L. Ginavan ROTC Scholarship Fund or West Side Christian Church.
