Ronald Alvin May, born on April 26, 1950, in Alva, Oklahoma, passed away on October 22, 2024, in Topeka, Kansas, at the age of 74. He had a distinguished career in Marine Corp and United States Airforce. During his time in service he also worked at Goodyear of Topeka.
Mr. May served with honor in the 190th Air Refueling Wing, where he retired in 2006 after over 33 years of service, achieving the rank of Chief Master Sergeant. His commitment to duty was evidenced by his participation in Desert Shield, Desert Storm, and Kosovo, among other assignments. He received multiple awards throughout his career, including the Meritorious Service Medal, the Air Medal, and the Aerial Achievement Medal with one device.
He was involved with the Shawnee County Hunter Safety Program. In the 1970's volunteered for Shawnee County Sheriff and the Silver Lake Fire Department. He took great pride in serving those around him.
Ronald cherished the moments spent outdoors, especially hunting, fishing, and camping. One of his greatest joys was spending time in nature with his grandchildren. He was particularly passionate about flying, which he enjoyed immensely. His shop was his home away from home where he liked to tinker. He brought joy to those he encountered.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Cheryl Lynn May; a son, Ivan May (Jayme); and a daughter, Jennifer Landis (Ryan). Ronald was a proud grandfather to six grandchildren: Michael Landis (Mercedes), Jessica Landis, Maryssa May, Evan May, Reagan Fellman, and Dayleigh May. He also leaves behind a great-grandchild, Maisyn Landis. His sisters, Shirley Harris, Willie Hughes (Mike), Katie Beachner, and Leatrice Jim (Bill), along with his sister-in-law Rhonda Majka (Joe) and brother-in-law Randy Freed (Kelly), as well as his mother-in-law Roberta Freed, are among his surviving family members. Ronald is also remembered fondly by many loved ones.
He was preceded in death by his mother, father, and brother, Donald May.
