Ross R. Riggs, 82, died at home in his sleep early Sunday morning. He was born April 15, 1925, in Hays, Kansas, to Edwin and Myra McKnight Riggs. He served in WWII as a sonar operator on the U.S.S. Greenwood. After discharge, he joined the Topeka Police Department. He was one of the first police helicopter pilots, and a charter member of the Fraternal Order of Police. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Thoroman Riggs. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on August 31, 2007. He also is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Rick and Perrin Riggs of Topeka, and their three Golden Retrievers; a sister, Violet Kenning of Owasso, OK, and a niece and nephew and their families. He was dearly loved by his family. At his request, he will be interred in a private ceremony at Mount Hope Cemetery. Contributions may be sent to the Topeka Rescue Mission, 600 N.
