Ruby Langhover Hodge

March 11, 1926 — June 1, 2014

Ruby Langhover Hodge, Wichita and Topeka, passed away June 1, 2014 in Topeka, Kansas at Midland Care Hospice House. Born in Woodbine, Kansas on March 11, 1926 to RH Langhover and Martha Ellen Johnson Langhover. Ruby was the youngest of 10 children, thus she was given no middle name, according to family lore, because they just ran out of them. She married Leslie Paul "Pete" Hodge on July 11, 1947 in Wichita, Kansas and is mother to Leslie Ray "Les" Hodge, formerly of Wichita, and Martha Hodgesmith, Lawrence, Kansas.

Ruby and Pete shared 57 years in Wichita on North Athenian and RVing across the country, hosting at the National Park Service camp at Poudre Canyon, Colorado, Rock Hound State Park, New Mexico and Theodore Roosevelt Lake, Arizona. They were known for their dedication to their families, neighbors, friends, churches, and fellow travelers. As a team they were renowned for their flower and vegetable gardening, furniture restoration, and ability to put on the best darn parties.

Ruby was a dedicated retail sales woman for 24 years at the JM McDonald Department Store in Twin Lakes Shopping Center in Wichita. Ruby was smart, irascible, endearing, maddening, loyal, forthright with opinions and advice, stubborn, and dedicated to taking on life no matter what it dealt her. That legacy of intelligence, will power and commitment is priceless to her family and friends.

Ruby was a fan of doctors and she was served by the rock stars of medicine in Wichita and Topeka. In Wichita, Drs. Anthony Pollock, Denis Knight, Jace Hyder, and Daniel Thompson repaired and/or replaced needed parts and managed Ruby for decades. In Topeka, the care of Dr. Mark Newt, Nurse Teresa Vail, Dr. Robert Porter, Nurse Rene Lombard, Drs. Guy Giroux, Michael Hurwitz, and Jim Hamilton ensured her the care she needed to live in her own home. The enduring commitment and dedication of her longtime friend, Lynn Alexander, gave Ruby the greatest of gifts, enabling her to live at Drury Place Apartments until her final days.

Ruby was predeceased by her parents, her sisters and brothers, her son in 2004, her husband in 2005, and son in law John E. McElroy III in 2010. She is survived by her daughter, Martha Hodgesmith, granddaughters in Wichita, Amy Hodge Wood (Lonnie), and Toni Hodge Scroggins (Kari), grandson Matthew McElroy (Jessica Pool) in Rochester, MN, 7 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. The enduring kindness, commitment, and caring of her niece Judy Duvanel and husband Larry of Phoenix, AZ reflect the best of what family is all about.
