Ruby Pauline Trahoon (Golden) of Topeka passed away at Stormont Vail Hospital on April 16, at 97 years of age, surrounded by her children. Throughout her life, including nearly eight decades as a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, she was a source of endless comfort and encouragement for her loved ones, who will miss her dearly.
She was born in Olean, Missouri in January 1928 to Archie and Mildred Golden.
Ruby graduated from Silver Lake High School in 1946. On June 16, 1949, she married her longtime sweetheart, Rolland Trahoon. The couple was married nearly 70 years and were members of First Baptist Church of Topeka.
Following her husband’s service in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and her job in advertising sales at Capper’s Weekly newspaper, Ruby became a homemaker. With a joyful heart and guided by her faith in the Lord, she created a warm and loving home for her family at the house she and Rolland built on Auburn Road, a bucolic place they affectionately referred to as “the Farm.” The Farm was a home Ruby filled with the sound of classic country and polka music, and it’s where she shared her talents as a gifted seamstress and baker, to the delight of those around her.
Ruby is survived by her children, Mellody (David) Trahoon-Harrison and Stacy Trahoon of Topeka and Rolland (Debbie) Trahoon II of Emporia.
Ruby will be fondly remembered by her grandchildren, Haley (Deron) Harrison-Lee, Gabriella (Stephen) Harrison, Tyler (Lindsey) Trahoon, Tagan (Kristi) Trahoon, Seth Flowers; her five great-grandchildren; sister Delores (Richard) Borough and brother James (Madelene) Golden, and sisters-in-law Carolyn Golden and Leota Golden. Ruby was preceded in death by her husband, Rolland, and siblings, Bonnie Redmon, Lonnie Golden, Carl Golden, and Raymond “Gene” Golden, and her brother-in-law Edward Redmon.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, April 22 at First Baptist Church, 3033 SW Macvicar Ave. Burial will follow at West Lawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. on Monday, April 21 at Dove Southwest Chapel, 3700 SW Wanamaker Road.
Memorial donations in memory of Ruby can be made to First Baptist Church and Phoenix Home Care & Hospice.
