Ruth E. Burton, 84, Topeka, died Friday, October 27, 2006, at Stormont-Vail Regional Health Center.
She was born December 4, 1921, in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Daniel Jacob and Grace Elzora Gilbert Hewitt. She graduated from Greensburg, Pennsylvania High School in 1939. She received her undergraduate degree from Penn State University in 1943 and also a Masters degree in anthropology from Penn State, where she was Phi Beta Kappa. She received a Masters degree in geography from the University of Florida and a Masters degree in education from Washburn University. She came to Topeka in 1958.
Mrs. Burton and her husband traveled the world. Col. Burton was a USAF Air Command Pilot. She taught school wherever they lived. Ruth taught in USD 501 for 18 years before retiring in 1988.
She had a life-long love of reading. She spent many years as a volunteer with Topeka/Shawnee County Public Library.
Ruth E. Hewitt married Robert W. Burton on June 29, 1944, in Greensburg, Pennsylvania. He died April 26, 1991. She was also preceded in death by three brothers and a sister.
Survivors include two daughters, Linda Noakes of Topeka and Janice Burton and her husband, J. Jay Minteer of Tampa, Florida. A brother, Wayne K. Hewitt of Pasadena, Texas, also survives. Mrs. Burton leaves behind three grandchildren, Ross Noakes of Topeka, Joy L. Noakes Isaacs and husband, Jake of Overland Park and Elizabeth Konrade of St. Petersburg, Florida, and two great-grandchildren of St. Petersburg.
Cremation is planned. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Wanamaker Woods Church of the Nazarene. Private inurnment will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery.
