Ruth E. Phelps, 77, of Topeka, died Wednesday, January 5, 2005 at her residence. She was born on December 12, 1927 in Chattanooga, Tennessee, the daughter of Leonard F. and Mable Nee Hunstad Sullivan. Mrs. Phelps was a member of the Highland Park United Methodst Church and participated in various church activities., Local No. 307 Auxillary and served as a Precinct Committee Woman for the Democratic Party. She married George C. Phelps on August 11, 1945 in Reno, Nevada. He preceded her in death on May 17, 1985. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Ina Mae Switzer in 2002. Survivors include a son, George, a daughter, son-in-law, two granddaughters, one brother and a number of nieces and nephews. Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday at the Mount Hope Chapel Garden Mausoleum. Burial will follow. Mrs. Phelps will lie in state after 2:00 p.m. Friday at Penwell-Gabel Southeast Chapel where the family will receive friends from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Friday evening.
