Samuel Alexander McCall, 83, of Topeka, passed away on July 9, 2008 at a Topeka care facility. He was born on July 24, 1924 in Topeka, the son of James A. and Kathryn Alexander McCall. He graduated from Topeka High School in 1942 and attended Washburn University. Sam was an Army veteran of World War II, serving nearly three years. He was engaged in three battles in Italy, Roma-Arno, North Apennenes and PO Valley. He received the "Bronze Star Medal" for heroic action for recovering a man in battle with his Medical Battalion "85 Custer Division Unit"; Fifth Army, the Good Conduct Medal and EAME Ribbon, European. Sam was employed by McCall Commercial Printing for 34 years and Hall Directory for 11 years before retiring in 1986. He was a member of Orient Lodge No. 51, AF&AM for over 60 years. Sam married Zona Gale Tibbitts on January 12, 1968 in Topeka. She survives. Other survivors include two daughters, Connie Falley and Roxanne (Larry) Payne, 5 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and 9 great-great-grandchildren. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews. Sam was preceded in death by his parents, James & Kathryn McCall, a son, James Patrick McCall, a brother, Dean A. McCall and a half-brother James Ellis McCall. Graveside services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Pleasant Hill Cemetery southeast of Topeka where Military Honors will be presented by a burial detail from Fort Riley, KS. Burial will follow. Sam will lie in state after 3:00 p.m. today at Penwell-Gabel Southeast Chapel.
