Sara Jean Mcghehey

Sara Jean McGhehey, 94, of Topeka, passed away Thursday, December 13, 2018.

She was born November 27, 1924 in Waynetown, Indiana, the daughter of Charles Burton Munns and Mary Edna Livengood. She graduated from Waynetown High School in 1942 and received a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education from Indiana University in 1949. Jean taught for one year at French Lick High School in French Lick, Indiana where she met Marion Arthur McGhehey. They were married on December 23, 1950. He preceded her in death on September 2, 1982.

Their early years were spent in Neptune, New Jersey; Tucson, AZ; Bloomington, Indiana and Falls Church, VA before settling in Topeka in 1962.

Survivors include five children: Kathleen, Highlands Ranch, CO, John (Jane) Alliance, NE, Peggy, Kansas City, MO, Stephen (Stacy), Wrentham, MA, and Jeffrey, Atlanta, GA; six grandchildren: Jill (Ryan) Alcorn, Conor McGhehey, Tate (Sarah) McGhehey, Molly McGhehey, Kayla McGhehey, Riley McGhehey, three great-grandchildren: Tyson Alcorn, Dillon Alcorn and Sophie McGhehey; daughter-in-law, Karen Rullman, one step-grandchild, Melissa Campbell; four step-great-grandchildren, Corbin, Haleigh, Jack and Jenna; a nephew, Richard Ellis; and niece, Marcella Reel.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Michael Edward; half-siblings: Lloyd Ellis; Grace Ellis Hamm; Harold Ellis; Charles Munns; William Munns and Mary Elizabeth Munns;and step-grandson, Steven Kibby.

Jean loved sports – especially tennis, football and basketball. Jean was a good cook and loved making pies for the annual community Thanksgiving dinner in Topeka.

She committed her life to Christ as an adult and was a long-time member and officer of the Women's Aglow Fellowship chapter in Topeka. Jean graduated from Victory Bible Institute in 1984. Jean made mission trips to Haiti and spent many years in prison ministry at the Topeka Correctional Facility for Women.

The family would like to thank the staff of Aldersgate Village for the care they provided our mother the last two years. Special thanks, also, to Cathy R and Debbie E and others for their visitations and grace they extended to our mother. It meant very much to us when we were at a distance.

A funeral ceremony will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, December 20, 2018 at the Mount Hope Cemetery & Funeral Chapel, 4700 SW 17th St., Topeka, Kansas. Interment will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Topeka.

The family will receive friends from 6-7 p.m., Wednesday at Dove Cremations and Funerals, Southwest Chapel, 3700 SW Wanamaker Road, Topeka.
