Sarah A. Stephens, 95, Topeka, passed away at her home on Tuesday, October 29, 2013.
Sarah was born June 12, 1918 in Atchison, the daughter of Isadore Edward and Grace (Bidding) Brouse. She and her sister Betty were orphaned at a very young age and grew up at the Bellefaire JCB orphanage. She graduated from Cleveland Heights (OH) High School and Strickler's Business College.
She married Robert Stephens on April 5, 1946.
Sarah owned and operated Stephens Cycle Company until her retirement in 1979. The business had been located in downtown Topeka until the late 1960's, when Sarah decided to build a new store at 800 S.W. 21st Street, in Topeka. Through Sarah's hard work and dedication, Stephens Cycle Company was honored by The Schwinn Bicycle Company numerous years in a row for outstanding sales achievement and she was the recipient of the Schwinn Thousand Club Award multiple times throughout her career.
She was a member of The Credit Women International Group (CWI) and served as President of the Club in the years 1973-1974. She was also a member of the Topeka Wheelmen.
Sarah was an avid gardener and loved sharing her plants with friends and family.
Sarah loved animals and always supported animal welfare organizations. She very much loved all of her dogs.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1965, and her sister Betty in June, 2013. Survivors include her sister Betty's children, nieces Marcia Benzuly (Frankfort, IL), Cheryl Barrera (Joliet, IL), Gloria Benzuly (Skokie, IL) and nephew, Sidney Benzuly (Madison, WI), her great nieces Carrie, April and Brie, and her great great niece Leah. Her brother's children, nephews Alan Brouse (MO) and Charles Brouse (MO). On her husband's side, her niece Shirley Christenberry (Topeka), her nephew Ken Stephens (MO).
Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, November 1, 2013 at Topeka Cemetery.
