Shirley Mae Matthews

Shirley Mae Matthews, 74, of Topeka, went to be with her Lord on Thursday, September 18, 2014. She was born April 27, 1940 in Missouri, the daughter of Lewis and Genevieve Hawkins Vaughn.
Shirley was educated in Topeka public schools. She was employed by Brewster Place and Rolling Hills Nursing Home prior to retiring. She was a member of the Church of God in Christ and attended Indiana Avenue Church of Christ.
Shirley married Robert Matthews in 1965 and their union lasted for 49 years. Survivors include her ex-husband, Robert Matthews, daughter, Lisa Brown, son, Robert Matthews, Jr., sister, Nora Gibbs all of Topeka, ten grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews and a host of relatives and friends.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, daughter, Maria Matthews Brown, twin sisters, Zelma Vaughn and Velma Tolson and brother, Lovell Vaughn.
Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, September 26, 2014 at Penwell-Gabel Southeast Chapel where the family the family will receive friends one hour prior to service time. Burial will follow in Mount Hope Cemetery. Penwell-Gabel Southeast Chapel is assisting the family.
