Stanley Wilfred Wakefield, 81, of Topeka, passed away Monday, February 14, 2022 after a lengthy battle with dementia.
He was born May 29, 1940, in Berwyn, Illinois, the son of Wilfred and Gladys Verdell (Campbell) Wakefield. He graduated from Lisle (Illinois) High School. He earned a bachelor's degree from Northern Illinois University and a master's degree in social work from Florida State University.
Stan was employed by the Menninger Foundation from 1969 until his retirement in 1999. He then went into private practice.
Stan married Nancy Glover (Kirk) in 1965. They later divorced. He then married Karen Phillips on August 22, 1981. She preceded him in death on April 23, 2021. Survivors include his daughter, Jennifer (Wakefield) Bagshaw (Bill) of Topeka; daughter-in-law Danielle (Smith) Wakefield of Stillwell, KS; grandchildren Riley and Campbell Bagshaw of Topeka, and Charlie Wakefield, Sarah Platt and Nick Platt of Stillwell, KS. He was preceded in death by his son Matthew Campbell Wakefield on May 8, 2020.
Family was the most important thing to Stan, and he lived to spend time with his grandchildren and to attend all of their activities – especially sports. He was a very talented photographer, selling his prints and giving them as gifts. He loved all of his pets, golfing and was a frequent patron of local casinos. He also loved a good Harvey Wallbanger.
His family and friends will miss his quick wit and often inappropriate sense of humor.
Stan was cremated. A Celebration of Life ceremony will be held later in the spring. He will be laid to rest in the Memory Wall at Memorial Park Cemetery in Topeka. Memorial contributions may be made to Kelly House, 2111 SW Randolph Avenue, Topeka, KS 66611.
Dove Cremations and Funerals Southwest Chapel is assisting the family.
