Starla Kay Shelby, 38, of Topeka, Kansas passed away March 15, 2017. She was born February 24, 1979 at Sterling, Colorado to Richard E. (Shelley) Shelby and Marlene Sue Graves.
Starla's family moved to Great Bend, KS, Fort Morgan, CO and Frankfort, IN before moving to Topeka in 1994. She graduated from Highland Park High School in 1997 and attended Community College of Cosmetology for a short time. Starla earned a certificate in medical coding and billing at Allen County Community College in 2008.
Starla worked at K-Mart as a cashier and was later promoted to Front End manager. She was also employed as a cashier at Target and Gordmans. In 2005 she began working for Student Treasures as a seasonal worker in the Key-In department. She was a vital person in this department and was very good at her job. She moved to the Check-In department and learned most of the various department jobs at Student Treasures. In 2014 she began working full-time in the Customer Service department and was promoted to a group leader in the Outsourcing department. While living in Harveyville for a few years, Starla was the site manager for the apartments she lived in.
Starla was a member of Phi Theta Kappa. She had lots of hobbies but she excelled at scrapbooking. She spent many hours crafting scrapbooks and took great pride in them. She enjoyed photography burning music and movies, playing Bingo, going to garage sales and eating out with her friends. She loved playing with her little dog Max and taking her nephew Logan to the movies.
She had a wonderful personality and a great sense of humor. She never held anything back, always told it like it was. She loved music and some of her favorites were Daughtry, New Kids on the Block, Back Street Boys and when she listened to his music,Alan Jackson reminded her of her dad.
Starla was preceded in death by her father. She is survived by her mother, Marlene Sue Graves; her brothers: Mike Shelley and Tim Shelley (Beth); her sister, Michelle; and her nephew Logan Shelley.
A memorial service will be held at noon Saturday, April 15, 2017 at Penwell Gabel Cemetery, 3616 SW 6th Ave, Topeka, Kansas.
