Stephen R. Diehl, 60, of Topeka, passed away at his home on Sunday, February 20, 2005 after a courageous fight with cancer. He was surrounded by his family. He was born on November 13, 1944 in Santa Monica, California, the son of Ralph A. and Avis Williams Diehl. He graduated from Highland Park High School in 1963. Steve was a Navy veteran, serving from August of 1963 through August of 1966. Stephen entered the Power Lineman Apprenticeship Program in August of 1966 and became a journeyman in June of 1969. Steve was a power lineman and a member of IBEW Local No. 304 since 1966. He worked for Kansas Power and Light from August of 1966 until September of 1973. He then worked for various contractors and had most recently been employed by Par Electrical Contractors. Stephen is survived by his wife, Patty and their children, Stacie Raine of Topeka, Jeffrey Diehl of Ottawa, Sarah Diehl of Johnston, Iowa, Maggie Diehl of Topeka, four grandchildren and his son, Jason Diehl. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at Penwell-Gabel Southeast Chapel. Cremation will follow services. Private inurnment will take place at a later date. Stephen will lie in state and the family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. The casket will remain closed. In honor of Steve, casual dress is encouraged.
