Stephen R. Grandstaff, 70, of Big Springs, Kansas, passed away Saturday, January 20, 2018 at Midland Hospice House in Topeka. He was born August 8, 1947 in Topeka, Kansas, the youngest son of Clarence Lee Grandstaff and Willa Candace (Kline) Grandstaff Norwood.
Steve was a longtime resident of Big Springs and enjoyed being involved in the community. He loved his family, his cattle, and his many friends. His pastimes included cooking, wine tasting, and teasing his sisters. His anecdotes and one-line responses brought laughs and smiles to all.
He served honorably in the Kansas Army National Guard and retired from the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway where he worked as a machinist. He was a member of Lecompton Lodge 420 AF&AM, Scottish Rite, and Arab Shrine.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two older brothers, Marvin Grandstaff and Melvin Grandstaff. Survivors include his three sisters: Linda (Bill) Estes, Lois (Mark) Elmer, and Carol (Mike) Stormer; two children, four grandchildren, and many nephews and nieces.
He was inspired by and found comfort in the teachings of the Dalai Lama. Two favorite sayings he embraced were "Love is the absence of judgment" and "Love and compassion are the true religions to me."
There will be a private remembrance at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to Midland Hospice House Kitchen, 200 SW Frazier Circle, Topeka, KS 66606; Channel 8 KCPT, 125 East Thirty-First Street, Kansas City, MO 64108; or Channel 11 KTWU, 1700 SW College Ave, Topeka, KS 66621.
