Steve Maassen, 71, died on September 24, 2017 at home following many years of illness. He was born on October 18, 1945 to Norman and Garnette (Pickard) Maassen in Vandalia, Illinois, but was raised primarily in Oklahoma, considering Tonkawa, Oklahoma his home.
He graduated from Southwestern Oklahoma University with a B.S. in medical technology. After working several years for Indian Health Services, he returned to college and graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a Master's degree in Public Health Administration. He then worked at Presbyterian hospital in Oklahoma City and finished his career with St. Francis Hospital in Topeka, retiring in 1999 due to health issues.
Following retirement, he became a very active member of Countryside United Methodist Church. He sang in the choir, served on many committees and boards and loved his "work" with the church. He also sang with Shawnee Choral Society when his health allowed.
He married Cathy Almy in December 1974 and she survives. He is also survived by his children; Stephanie Rohr, Jim Almy and Laura (Rick) Martin in addition to his beloved grandchildren; Brylee and Tiffany Rohr and Layne and Ember Martin. He is also survived by his three feline fur babies.
He was predeceased by his parents and sister and brother-in-law, Charlette and Ed Buzzi.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, September 30, 2017 at Countryside United Methodist Church. A visitation will be held one hour prior to service.
