Steven Dale Stucky

January 22, 1948 — July 16, 2022

Steven Dale Stucky of Topeka, Kansas passed away on July 16th, 2022, at the age of 74. He is survived by his beloved wife of 51 years, Patricia Ann (Jones) Stucky, son Dr. Brian Dale Stucky, and daughter in law Jacqueline Laurita Cortese. Steve was born in Hutchinson, Kansas on January 22nd, 1948, to parents Clarence "Snook" Dale Stucky and Pearl K. Stucky, and younger brother to Karen K. (Stucky) Kelly.

He attended Haven High School and graduated with the class of 1966 and later attended both Hutchison Community College and Pittsburg State University.

He began his distinguished military career with the Kansas Air National Guard in 1967 as an avionics technician. He transitioned into the role of an in-flight refueler (boom operator) in 1977 as the 190th Air Refueling Wing began an air refueling mission with KC-135 aircraft. In this role he received the Distinguished Flying Cross in 1992, served as the Chief Boom Operator for the 117th Air Refueling Squadron, and was named the 190th Air Refueling Wing Command Chief Master Sergeant in 2001 before retiring in 2004 after 36 years of military service.

In addition to his military career, he was an experienced pilot and held multiple ratings including Visual Flight Rules (VFR), Commercial, Formation Flying Inc. (FFI), and Dynamic Maneuvering with the International Council of Air Shows (ICAS). He built two airplanes, a Vari-Eze (N282S), now on display at the Coffeyville Aviation Heritage Museum and an RV-7 (N283S). With his RV-7 he enjoyed flying formation as a member of the KC Flight Formation Team and performed at air shows nationally. In addition to flying, his natural curiosity and excitement for learning was manifested in his ability to engineer, build, and create. He was an experienced photographer, competitively raced RC boats and flew indoor and RC airplanes, and enjoyed many other outdoor hobbies including golf, camping, hunting, and fishing. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church and volunteered at the State Street School.
