Sylvia Kendrick Boyd, 79, of Topeka, passed away Friday, March 30, 2018.
She was born Easter Sunday, April 17, 1938, in Memphis, Tennessee, the daughter of Murvale and Nina (Harrison) Kendrick. She received a Master's Degree in Music from Louisiana State University.
Sylvia was employed by Northeast Louisiana State College, Monroe, later for Illinois Wesleyan University, Bloomington and most recently by Washburn University, retiring in 2000. She provided private flute lessons throughout her life.
Mrs. Boyd was a member of Sigma Alpha Lota Professional Music Fraternity. Sylvia served as principal flutist in the Bloomington-Normal (IL), Fort Wayne (IN) and Topeka symphony orchestras. She was also a fellow in the Tanglewood Music Center program (then called the Berkshire Music Center) and studied with flutists William Kincaid and Jean-Pierre Rampal. Her most intense study was with life-long friend John Patterson at LSU for whom she established a scholarship.
Sylvia married Rodney Boyd on August 15, 1965 in Memphis, TN. He survives.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Sylvia loved music and traveling, especially visiting Ogunquit, Maine.
Honoring Sylvia's request, cremation is planned. No services are scheduled. Dove Cremations and Funerals, Southwest Chapel is assisting the family.
