Thomas Blaine Hummer, 91, of Topeka, passed away on Monday, January 30, 2012 at a Topeka hospital.
He was born on July 27, 1920 in Oakland, KS, the son of Clayton and Elva Magee Hummer. He graduated from Topeka High School. He was an Army veteran of WWII, serving in the 9th Armored Division which participated in the Battle of the Bulge.
Tom was employed by Beatrice Creamery before joining the Topeka Fire Department in February of 1948 where he rose to the rank of District Chief before retiring on August 7, 1970. Prior to his passing, he was the oldest living Topeka firefighter. He attended Oakland United Methodist Church and a member of the Oakland Odd Fellows.
Tom married Marjorie Hockett on July 28, 1941 in Oskaloosa, KS. She preceded him in death on March 10, 2002. He was also preceded in death by his son, Tommy Lee Hummer on January 27, 2012. Survivors include one daughter, Cheryl (Bob) Holt of Tecumseh, one son Terry Hummer of Topeka, eight grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren and three sisters, Harriet Starr, Jean (J.P.) Draper, and Becky (Don) Mathers, all of Topeka.
Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday at Penwell-Gabel Southeast Chapel. Burial will follow in Topeka Cemetery. Thomas will lie in state and the family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the Thomas B.
