Tilman Calhoun Newkirk, known as T.C., passed away on April 15, 2025, in Topeka, Kansas, at the age of 87. Born on July 10, 1937, in Wheeler, Texas, he graduated from Samnorwood Schools in 1955 near Shamrock, Texas, and went on to have a career spanning 41 years in the railroad industry. For 37 years, he was a dedicated employee at Sante Fe and Burlington Northern Railroad, followed by four years at Bartlett West before retiring at the age of 62.
T.C. cherished his role as father and grandfather and was very proud of his sons and grandchildren. Something that people would remember about him would be his sense of humor.
He developed his culinary skills, especially barbeque, and enjoyed cooking for neighbors, family and friends. He enjoyed photography before smartphones and captured landscapes, travel experiences, and family moments. He enjoyed pets throughout his life loving many dogs, Sally, Taz, Fritz and Caesar among them. He enjoyed traveling after retirement with his wife Joy, Guy, Karen and with friends to Europe, Hawaii and the Caribbean.
He leaves behind his two sons, Jay Scott Newkirk and Colin Andrew Newkirk, along with three grandchildren - Madison (Toby) Newkirk, Fletcher (Adriana) Zerger, and Tanner Zerger. He is also survived by his care giver Joy Newkirk with whom he celebrated 55 years of marriage. His brother Guy (Karen) Newkirk, along with many nieces and nephews.
T.C. is preceded in death by his parents, Tilman Sr. and Mildred Flynt Newkirk, as well as his brother Ray (Norma) Newkirk, and his sisters Kay Nichols and Betty Ridge. As well as his two young children Trent T. Newkirk and Trey C. Newkirk.
T.C. will be remembered as a devoted family man whose legacy of love, humor, and dedication will continue through all who knew him.
Due to memory issues, his last few years were difficult and the family wishes to thank both the staff at Celebration Villa Assisted Living and the staff at Tanglewood for their care and support.
