Velesta Elizabeth (Thompson) Camblin passed away January 8, 2009 at EventideConvalescentCenter in Topeka.
She was born October 20, 1909, on a ranch near Glen Elder, Kansas, the daughter of Daniel Beerse Thompson and Anna Letitia (Whitley) Thompson. Velesta was the oldest of four sisters and on brother. She married Wilbur Boyd Camblin on Christmas Eve, 1932. He preceded her in death. She is survived by her sister Letitia Tobias, Colorado; two sons, Alvin Lee and Barbara (Mumma) Camblin of Topeka, and Paul Eugene Camblin, California. She has two grandsons, Clayton and Bradley, and four great grandchildren, Austin, Hailey, Colin, and Megan. Another grandson, David, preceded her in death.
At an early age her family moved to the Abilene area. She graduated from AbileneHigh School in 1928. Velesta entered the Vail School of Nursing at ChristHospital (now Stormont), graduating with the class of 1931. She remained a Registered Nurse her entire life.
After briefly leaving nursing to raise their two sons, she returned in943 as the Night Supervisor of Nursing at SecurityBenefitAssociationHospital. In 1948, she joined the staff at Stomont-Vail where she served as the Night Supervisor of Nursing. While working full time, she received her Bachelors of Science Degree from WashburnUniversity in 1954. After retirement from Stormont in 1976, she became the Supervisor of Nursing at the EventideConvalescentCenter until again retiring in 1986. She maintained the 10 1/2 acres of the family home on Baldwin Road until she entered EventideConvalescentCenter as a resident in May 2003.
She will long be remembered by those she worked for, with, and on during her dedicated 50 years of nursing to the Topeka community. She was known for her tough exterior, but more for her tender and caring heart. The nursing profession has lost a true champion and a standard bearer of ethics and dedication.
A memorial service will be conducted at Penwell-Gabel Southeast Chapel, 2843 SE Minnesota, Topeka, KS, on Tuesday, January 13, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. Friends are invited, no flowers please. Inurnment will follow at the TopekaCemetery.
