Vera Ann Webster, 78, of Topeka, passed away Sunday, May 3, 2020.
She was born April 11, 1942, in Iola, Kansas, the daughter of Leo J. and Margaret (Heffern) Massoth. She was a graduate and Valedictorian of St. Patrick's High School in Parsons, Kansas and graduated from Mercy School of Nursing in Fort Scott, Kansas. She received her Bachelor's Degree in Nursing from the University of Kansas and received a Master's Degree in Adult Education from Kansas State University.
Vera's varied nursing career included working as a Hospital Staff Nurse at St. Francis Hospital, Traveling Nurse for the State of Kansas, teaching LPN and RN Student Nurses at Kaw Area Vocational Technical School of Nursing and Stormont-Vail School of Nursing. She also worked for the Headstart Program in Topeka and provided hospice care for Midland Hospice Care and Advantaged Home Health Care.
She served as a Red Cross Volunteer for 25 years and was an Official Board Member for nine consecutive years for the District Nursing Association. She also served as a Board Member for the Kansas State Nurses Association and served on the Board of the Topeka Headstart Program. During her years of teaching, she developed skills in writing test questions. She was selected to represent Kansas in writing test questions for practical nursing graduates taking the National Licensure Exam. The item writing was held at the McGraw-Hill Book Company in Monterey, CA.
She was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church and the Ward-Meade Garden Club in Topeka.
Vera married Lawrence Raymond Webster on June 3, 1967 at Holy Name Catholic Church in Topeka. He survives of the home. Other survivors include two children, Greg (Christina) Webster of Shawnee, KS and Christina Webster of Kansas City, MO; and her brother, Jake (Ann) Marshall of Overland Park, KS.
Vera loved to spend time with family and friends. She learned to crochet in the seventh grade and made many items over the years, including prayer blankets for hospitalized patients. She enjoyed reading mystery books, especially Nancy Drew and Sherlock Holmes novels and was an avid KU basketball fan and all things KU.
A private prayer service will be held at Dove Cremations and Funerals, Southwest Chapel in Topeka. A recording of the service will be available soon. Please check back later for more information.
A private graveside service will be at St. Martin's Cemetery in Piqua, Kansas.
