Vernie D. Covert, Sr., age 83, of Topeka, passed away on Thursday, February 27, 2025, at a local hospital. Born on October 17, 1941, in Topeka, he was the son of Dean and Lula (Moberly) Covert.
Vernie graduated from Highland Park High School and, alongside his wife Ruthie, owned and operated Covert's Wrecker Service and Covert’s Drywall for over 40 years. He was a dedicated member of First Presbyterian Church and involved in racing as a driver, pit crew member, car owner, and the biggest fan of his grandchildren. He will be inducted into the C.A.R.B. racing Hall of Fame on March 8, 2025.
Vernie married Ruth "Ruthie" M. Hefner on June 19, 1960, in Topeka. Their 63 years of marriage where they shared a profound bond and were inseparable. Ruthie passed away on May 5, 2023, preceding him in death.
Vernie is survived by his children: Vernie (Sharon) Covert, Jr. of Topeka and Darla (Jeff) Covert of Bonner Springs; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and his brother, Jerry (Teresa) Covert.
Per Vernie’s request, we're throwing a Celebration of Life on Saturday, March 22, 2025, at 1:00 PM, at 2235 SE Croco Rd. Reverend Patrick Yancey will kick things off with some heartfelt words, and then get ready for Vernie's ultimate Victory Lap Celebration.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 817 SW Harrison St., Topeka, Kansas 66612 or the C.A.R.B. Hall of Fame & Museum, Inc., 3120 NE Legacy Wood Dr., Lee’s Summit, Missouri 64086.
Dove Southeast Chapel, 2843 SE Minnesota Ave., is assisting the family with service arrangements.
