Vincent Osterhaus
September 27, 1930 — February 8, 2020
Vincent B. Osterhaus, 89, Topeka, passed away Saturday, February 8, 2020 at Lexington Park in Topeka with his family by his side. He was born September 27, 1930 in Beattie, KS, the son of Joseph A. and Josephine (Enneking) Osterhaus, Sr.
Vince graduated from St. Benedict Catholic High School in 1949. He joined the U.S. Army in 1955 and proudly served for six years until he was honorably discharged. He worked in concrete construction for over 50 years, well until his 70s. Most of his time was spent working for Gold Star Concrete Construction, J &T Concrete, Kinder Construction, and co-owned ROKK Concrete for a time. He would continue to work jobs on his own, by word of mouth, until he retired.
Vince was a member of the Knights of Columbus, enjoyed coffee with his friends in the mornings, and regularly attended Most Pure Heart Catholic Church.
Vince's greatest joy in life was his family. He was very involved with his sons' athletic and school endeavors, his grandsons could always count on grandpa to take them on walks, and he loved talking and video chatting with his granddaughters. He followed the Kansas City Royals and St. Louis Cardinals baseball teams and was also a dedicated Notre Dame football fan, rarely missing a game.
Vince married Rita Buchanan in 1977 and they later divorced. Survivors include a sister Gladys Ennis (Osterhaus) of Rockford, IL, a brother Clarence Osterhaus, Topeka, two step-sons, Brent Buchanan, Topeka, Thomas (Rachel) Buchanan, Berryton; two sons, Brian (Lindsey) Osterhaus, Oberlin, KS, James Osterhaus, Topeka, eight grandchildren, and one great-grandson.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Whittmer and Rose McMurphy and four brothers, Joe Jr., Raymond, Kenny, and Melvin Osterhaus.
Cremation has taken place. Memorial Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 15, 2020 at Dove Southeast Chapel, 2843 SE Minnesota Ave. where the family will receive friends one hour prior to service time.
