Virginia Pence Lockhart, 94, Topeka, passed away Monday, February 13, 2017.
She was born April 3, 1922, in Silver Lake, Kansas, the daughter of Walter and Golda (Wilson) Pence.
She graduated from Silver Lake High School, received her bachelors from Washburn University and Master's from Berkley University.
In 1942, she started working as a stenographer at the Kansas State Board of Health and Education. In 1961, she became the director and retired after 48 years with the department.
Virginia was a member of the Bethel Chapel in Silver Lake, one of the founders of TARC and recipient of several awards including the Crumbine Award. In 1969, she served as president of the Kansas Public Health Association, where she received several public health honors and awards.
Survivors include her daughter, Gina Lockhart, Topeka and nieces Cathey Whitegon and Judy Badger, as well as other extended family.
Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. followed by funeral services at 10:00 am on Friday, February 17, 2017 at Penwell-Gabel Southwest Chapel, 3700 SW Wanamaker Road, Topeka. Interment will be at Prairie Home Cemetery.
