Wanice Arlene (Walker) Haas

Wanice Arlene (Walker) Haas, 89, passed away on Friday, September 13, 2019. She was born January 4, 1930, to Fred and Zelma Walker.

Wanice grew up on a farm in Overbrook, Kansas and graduated from Overbrook Rural High School. She went on to become a proud Kansas State University Wildcat. She graduated from Kansas State University in 1951. On graduation day she married her high school sweetheart, Richard Haas. They celebrated 68 years of marriage last May.

As an elementary teacher for many years she shared a love for learning with her students. Often implementing new and exciting learning techniques to improve students' school experiences. Wanice earned her Master's Degree from Washburn University in elementary education in 1968. Most of her teaching career was in the Shawnee Heights School District retiring in 1989.

Wanice enjoyed the outdoors, spending hours watching, identifying and feeding a variety of birds that came to the farm. She loved the rural life and devoted many hours to gardening. When the family was growing up, they spent time boating and skiing with other families and friends often camping at the local campgrounds.

In retirement Wanice traveled with Richard sharing numerous educational adventures and genealogy searches. She found more time to spend with grandchildren, family and friends. Wanice continued her lifetime love of sporting events, including watching and supporting her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren play sports.

Wanice was an active member of Berryton United Methodist Church. She served on various committees, taught Sunday School, and was a prayer chain participant.

Wanice is survived by her husband, Richard Haas of Overbrook; 4 children and their spouses, Gregg and Cindy Haas of Berryton, Kansas, Gayla and Grant Anderson of Olathe, Kansas, Gwenn and Rob Pike of Shawnee, Kansas, Gary and Mona Haas of Clarkston, Washington; 9 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Friday, September 20, 2019 at the Berryton United Methodist Church.

Memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, September 21, 2019 at the Berryton United Methodist Church.
