Wayne W. Howbert, 98, Topeka, passed away Sunday, July 8, 2018 at a local care center.

Wayne was born July 4, 1920 in Shawnee County, the youngest of 2 sons born to Paul and Bessie (O'Dell) Howbert. He graduated from Berryton Rural High School, attended Ottawa University and Arkansas City Junior College before joining the Army Air Corps in 1942. He served England with the 8th Air Force Bombardment Group during World War II.

He graduated from Washburn University in 1948 and received his Master's Degree from Colorado State Teachers College in 1954.

He taught Mathematics and Driver's Education at Washburn Rural High School for over 36 years, retiring in 1984. He continued to be a strong supporter of its sports and activities until his death.

He was a member of KNEA, Washburn Rural Optimist Club and American Legion Post 400. He was a past Treasurer of SCABA; and coached girls' softball at Lake Shawnee for many years.

Wayne married Betty Jean Nissen on August 30, 1947. Together they enjoyed over 69 years of marriage prior to her death on March 28, 2017. Survivors include children, Judy Forster (Dean) of Topeka and Rick Howbert (Donna) of Chino, CA; five grandchildren, Brian Forster (Laura), Kristin Forster, Courtney Smith, Sarah Howbert, and Jeremy Howbert; five great grandchildren, Kayden Smith, Kamryn Smith, Kaity Howbert, Drake Howbert and Emery Forster, and numerous cousins.

Wayne was also preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Dale Howbert.

Graveside services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 14, 2018 at Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, July 13, 2018 at Dove Southwest Chapel, 3700 SW Wanamaker Road.

Memorial contributions may be made to Washburn Rural High School designated for the Wayne Howbert Friend of Youth Scholarship.
