Wilbur R. Senne, 94, Topeka, passed away on August 29, 2010 at Midland Hospice House. He was born January 18, 1916 in Topeka, the son of George and Julia (Horacek) Senne.
Wilbur married Margaret Dutton on October 4, 1941 in Topeka. She died July 4, 2009. He was also preceded in death by daughter, Linda Wiedwald; and brothers, Harry and Clyde Senne.
He is survived by his sons, Bruce (Doris) Senne and Steve (Jo) Senne, all of Topeka; daughters, Mary Johnson, Kansas City, Theresa Senne, Austin, TX; seven grandchildren; and six great grandchildren.
Wilbur graduated from Topeka High School in 1934 and attended Washburn and Kansas University where he studied civil engineering. He was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity.
Wilbur joined the Seabees in 1942 and served with the Navy overseas for three years. He was attached to the 2nd Marine division at Guadalcanal, Saipan and Tinian. He helped in constructing the airstrip on Tinian that the B-29's rose to bomb Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August of 1945. Upon returning home from the war, he joined his father's construction company, George Senne & Co, where he served as President.
In his 65 years in the building industry he constructed schools, medical facilities, churches, factories, warehouses, water treatment facilities and commercial buildings in Kansas and surrounding states including St. Thomas, in the Virgin Islands, where he had a branch office.
Wilbur enjoyed his close relationship with employees and clients and thought of their friendship and mutual respect as being most important.
In his spare time, he enjoyed hunting and fishing and usually had a black Labrador retriever with him. Wilbur was also a member of the Shawnee Country Club where he enjoyed playing golf.
Next month Wilbur would have celebrated 36 years as an A.A. member where he often spoke with other recovering alcoholics and their families.
Cremation is planned and a memorial service will be held at a later date. Inurnment will be in the Mount Hope Abbey Mausoleum which he also helped in constructing.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 2, 2010 at the Penwell-Gabel Family Center, 1940 NW Central.
