William D. Payne

July 13, 1947 — March 19, 2016

William D. "Bill" Payne, 68, of Topeka, passed away on Saturday, March 19, 2016 at Midland Hospice House in Topeka. He was born July 13, 1947 in Topeka, the son of Victor E. and Marjorie A. (Heitmann) Payne.

Bill graduated from Meriden High School in 1965. He was an Army Veteran of the Vietnam War.

Bill was employed by Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, Doorbell Automotive and Walmart North where he received awards for his bravery and honesty.

Bill was a member of Ozawkie American Legion Post No. 225, Meriden V.F.W. Post No. 10815 and The Way International Ministries. Bill enjoyed playing Pink Floyd on his guitar and harmonica. He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

Bill married Dale Ann Scott in 1966. They later divorced. Bill married Catherine Ann Green on July 9, 1977. She preceded him in death on November 3, 1991. Bill later married Betty L. Duncan Payne on April 7, 1995. She survives. Other survivors include his children, Jill Kathleen Payne-O'Connor of Meriden, James Michael (Mia) Payne of Topeka, David William Payne of Meriden, four grandchildren, Joseph William O'Connor, Jacob Francis O'Connor, Emily Catherine Payne and Jace Daniel Payne, one brother, Daniel G. (Connie) Payne of Meriden, one sister, Kathie (Melvin) Slater of Topeka and his faithful sidekick, Fred.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Mary C. Stilley and one brother, Michael E. Payne.

Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, March 24, 2016 at Penwell-Gabel Southeast Chapel where the family will receive friends one hour prior to service time. Private inurnment will take place in Meriden Cemetery at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to Helping Hands Humane Society, 5720 SW 21st St., Topeka, KS 66604 or to the Topeka Rescue Mission, 600 N. Kansas Ave., Topeka, KS 66608.
