William E. Finney

William "Bill" E. Finney, 86, of Topeka, died on Saturday, October 26, 2013 at Midland Hospice House.

William was born on March 23, 1927 to Chester L. and Mary (Malone) Finney in West Frankfort, IL.

At the age of 16, he enlisted in the United States Navy and served in World War II as a Ship's Cook 3rd Class. At the conclusion of the war, Bill returned home to Illinois and worked for a period of time for his future father-in-law, Leonard A. Schick. In 1946, Bill enlisted in the United States Army and served honorably in the Korean conflict; he retired from service in 1965 as a Staff-Sergeant E-6.

Bill was united in marriage to Leona Schick on September 13, 1947 in Benton, IL; they celebrated 66 years of happy marriage together. She survives of the home.

After his retirement from the Army, Bill went to work for the United States Postal Service, where he worked for over 21 years as a custodian until his second retirement in 1987.

Bill was involved locally with the Boy Scouts of America and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post# 1650 in Topeka. He enjoyed fishing, camping, and spending time with his family.

Bill is survived by his wife, Leona Finney of Topeka; sons, Timothy (Huong) Finney and Anthony (Charlene) Finney, both of Topeka and Leonard (Janet) Finney of Manhattan; daughter, Rose (Jim) Peak of Topeka, four grandchildren, Matthew (Rebekah) Finney of Knoxville,TN, Joseph (Abby) Finney of Mt. Pleasant, MI, Kim McClain and Nicholas Finney, both of Topeka; one great-grandson, David (Taylor) McClain of Topeka; and one great-great granddaughter, Hayden McClain.

He was preceded in death by his parents and by his twelve siblings.

Burial with full military honors will take place at Leavenworth National Cemetery at 1:30 p.m., on Thursday, October 31, 2013. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to either Midland Care, 200 SW Frazier circle, Topeka, KS 66606, American Lung Association, 4300 Drury Lane, Topeka, KS 66604 or to the Wounded Warrior Project, PO Box 758517 Topeka, KS 66675.
