William Gottlieb Luckert

August 13, 1920 — March 14, 2015

William (Bill) Gottlieb Luckert, 94, passed away peacefully Saturday, March 14, 2015, in Topeka, Kansas.

Bill was born August 13, 1920, near Rozel, Kansas. He joined the Army in 1942, serving in the 921st Field Artillery Battalion of the 96th "Deadeye" Division in the Pacific Theater and was awarded a Bronze Star for heroic service in Okinawa.

Following military service, Bill returned to the Goodland, Kansas, area where he met and married Gladys Iona Rohr. Together they raised three children while farming nearby. Eventually the family moved to Goodland, and Bill began work maintaining roads for the State of Kansas and was especially valued for his work ethic and mechanical skills.

Bill and Iona retired to Topeka, Kansas, to be closer to family and life-long friends. They were active members of the Community of Christ Church and enjoyed attending their grandchildren's many school and sporting events and their RV adventures with friends.

Bill will be especially remembered for his devotion to his wife Iona and his family, love of puzzles, quick smile, iconic train whistle, generous and caring nature, strong Christian faith, and ability to meet and befriend any stranger. He was preceded in death by his parents Fredrick and Emma; his wife Iona; brothers George, John, and Charles (Bud); and sisters Florine Burt, Marie Platt, Viola Stein, and Ruth Ann Luckert.

He is survived by his daughters Cheryl Ann Hohner (Kelvin) and Marla J. Luckert (Ken Morse), and son Richard William Luckert (Laura); grandson Christopher Hohner; granddaughters Kelsey Senn, Sarah Morse Mayo (Andy), Alisa Morse, and Arin Morse; great grandsons Tyler Hohner (Miranda), Brice DeWitt, and Devin Hohner; great-granddaughter Abigail Senn; sisters Freida Roberts (Elmer), Grace Pyles (Gene), and Beulah Barbosa; brothers Frank Luckert (Judy) and Ernest Luckert; and sister-in-law Roberta Luckert.

A visitation will be held Friday, March 20, 5 to 7 p.m., at the Penwell-Gabel Southwest Chapel, 3700 SW Wanamaker Rd., Topeka and a memorial service honoring Bill will be held Saturday, March 21, 10:30 a.m. at the same location.
