Yvonne Kay (Nelson) Corn, 85, of Topeka, passed away Saturday, January 28, 2017 at Midland Care in Topeka, Kansas.
She was born December 6, 1931, in Overbrook, Kansas, the youngest daughter of Earl and Edith (Wadsworth) Nelson. She attended Topeka High and graduated in the spring of 1949. She received a Bachelor's of Art Degree in Art from Washburn University in hopes of becoming an Art teacher.
Yvonne or Kay, who is how most people knew her by, was employed by the SRS in Topeka, Kansas for 25 years, retiring in the early 1990's. Although exhausting at times, Kay enjoyed working for SRS because she was able to help children and families.
Yvonne was a member of the Alpha Phi Sorority at Washburn University and the Topeka Art Guild. She always talked about how proud she was to be an Alpha Phi and her art. Some of her hobbies included, painting, which she got from her dad who was a wonderful artist himself, collecting jewelry and pigs, anything crafty, sewing and watching her grandchildren in their various activities. When she was a young girl she always wanted to be her daddy's tomboy, so as she got older she became an avid fisherwoman in Minnesota with her family and watching KU Basketball. She also enjoyed talking about her Swedish Heritage and passing down Swedish traditions that she learned from her dad with her two boys and grandchildren. One thing that she loved the most while growing up was spending time on her grandparent's farm, in Overbrook, Kansas. This is something she would continue to do with her two boys when she became a mother.
Yvonne was a wonderful daughter, sister, loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Yvonne married Clifford Larson Corn on June 18, 1950 in Iowa. Survivors include a husband, Clifford Larson Corn, two sons Charles Larson (Kathy Britton) Corn, Clovis, New Mexico, Nelson Patrick Corn, Topeka, Kansas; 5 grandchildren, Kelly (Brian Graham) Corn, Clovis, New Mexico, Christy Corn, Clovis, New Mexico, Lisa (Alex) Collette, Topeka, Kansas, Charles "Charlie" Jr. (Donna Hale) Corn, Sacramento, California and Aaron (Tish Williams) Corn, Topeka, Kansas. Yvonne had 5 great-grandchildren with 1 on the way; Makahla (Christy), Kaden and Madisyn (Lisa), Sophia and baby Zoey (Aaron), Natalie (Charlie), as well as many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Earl Levi August and Edith Adele Nelson, two sisters; Beth Nelson (Merle) Rider, Lakin, Kansas and Jane Nelson (Frances) Beal, Topeka, Kansas.
Yvonne was cremated with Dove Cremation & Funeral Service and the remains will stay with her husband until he plans to spread her ashes at her parent's gravesite in Overbrook, Kansas.
