Zona G. Berberich

December 26, 1946 — July 18, 2014

Zona Gale (Thompson) Berberich

Zona Berberich passed on Friday, July 18, 2014 in Topeka, KS. She was born in Pulaski, VA to Lillian and Toney Thompson on Dec. 26, 1946. She spent part of her youth in Delaware before moving to Jersey City as a young girl. She met her husband John when he famously chased away bullies harassing her on tennis courts in Jersey City. They married on Nov. 12, 1966. John passed hours before Zona on the same day, July 18. Zona was the mother to three loving children, Debbie, Stacey and Johnny. They spent many happy years in New Jersey before moving to Topeka, KS in 1979. Zona was a homemaker who always said her happiest years were spent raising her children. Zona was a devoted grandma to eight grandchildren who all adored her. It is said that love is infinite and the love in Zona's heart grew tenfold with the addition of each of her children and grandchildren. There was not an activity that she did not attend, a boo-boo that she did not kiss, a toy she did not buy, or a day where she did not show her family how much she loved and cared for them. She has helped raise all eight of her grandchildren. She was an endless supply of hugs, words of encouragement, and taught kindness and compassion above all else. Zona was also a caring hand to any animal in need, adopting and caring for more animals than can be counted. Zona was also known as a MacGyver of home projects and believed that there was nothing duct tape could not fix. Zona was preceded in death by her husband John. She is survived by her sister Betty Sarno, New Jersey, her daughter Debbie (Jared Holroyd), Topeka, daughter Stacey (Ben Frisch), Prairie Village, son John (Becky Tebbutt), Topeka, and eight loving grandchildren, Drew Tebbutt-Berberich, Alexandra Frisch, Darby Holroyd, Max Frisch, Jacek Holroyd, Gavin Berberich, Lillian Frisch, and William Frisch. Zona's daily presence will be deeply missed by every member of her family.

The family invites friends to stop by and share stories and memories of John and Zona from 5pm-7pm Wednesday, July 23, at Mt. Hope Chapel, 4700 SW 17th St, Topeka, KS.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the Helping Hands Humane Society, 5720 SW 21st St, Topeka, KS 66614.
