1930 - 2023

Winifred Arlene Payne, 93, of Topeka, passed away Saturday, July 29, 2023.

Winnie was born April 18, 1930, in Miltonvale, Kansas, the daughter of Lloyd and Ina (Kaiser) Whitney. She was a graduate of Miltonvale High School. Winnie attended Wesleyan College, Miltonvale, where she received a Bachelor’s degree in Education. Winnie taught for the Miltonvale School District, in a one room schoolhouse.

She met Mark, the love of her life at age 15 they subsequently married and soon, Mark was sent overseas for a tour during WWll.

During his absence Winnie taught for the Miltonvale School District, in a one room schoolhouse. Following his return, Mark and Winnie moved to Manhattan, Kansas. Winnie became a stay at home Mother to son Mark and daughter Michelle. After several years, Winnie returned to the workforce and spent many years working for Dr. Kovarik. Winnie loved her time there, almost as much as the office staff loved having her working with them. She was such a joy and was amazing with people. Dr. would indicate, she helped build his practice. Winnie enjoyed singing, piano, collecting antiques, shopping, cooking, and spending time with her family. Winnie and Mark enjoyed 63 years together. They were inseparable until Marks death December 24, 2015. Her last year was spent at Homestead and the residents and staff all became a part of her family She so loved her family: son, Mark W. (Kathleen), Daughter, T. Michelle, (Mike). Grandsons: Taylor (Dani), Miles and Mark G. Great grandchildren: Tori, (Issac) and Silas. Her sisters: Beth, Ruth and June. She was preceded in death by her parents; and siblings: Keith, Shirley, and Pat. Winnie will be missed by all.

Honoring her request, cremation is planned. A memorial ceremony will be at 1:30 PM on Sunday, August 27th at Homestead of Topeka, 5820 SW Drury Lane.
