Mercedes May Anno, 90, of Topeka, passed away on Thursday, January 11, 2024. She was born January 8, 1934 in Nadeau, Michigan, the daughter of Edward and Mary (Garrigan) Smiltneek.
Mercedes graduated from High School in Stephenson, Michigan. She was employed by Fleming Co. GMD for 29 years before retiring. She was a member of Teamsters Local Union No. 696 and active in Boy Scouts of America where she served as a Den Mother. Mercedes was a long-time member of St. Matthew Catholic Church. After retiring, she traveled extensively on bus tours throughout the United States. She enjoyed gardening, working in her yard and flower beds.
Mercedes married William Eugene Anno, Sr. in 1955. He preceded her in death on August 12, 2004. She is also preceded in death by her son, William E. Anno Jr. in 1997, granddaughter, Sarah Anno in 2012 and her four brothers, Leroy E. Smiltneek, Cecil Smiltneek, Keith Smiltneek, Sr. and Gary Smiltneek, Sr.
Survivors include four sons, Albert Edward "Pete" Anno, Ricky Lee (Kim) Anno, Michael Anthony Anno all of Topeka and Danny Joe (Linda) Anno of Hoyt, five grandchildren, Jeffrey, Katie, Trisha, Michelle and Joseph, ten great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren and her sister, Maureen (Dave) Faccio of Hermansville, Michigan.
A Celebration of Mercedes's Life will be held and announced in the spring. Private inurnment will take place at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to Let’s Help, Inc., 200 S. Kansas Avenue, Topeka, Kansas 66603 or to Meals on Wheels, 2134 SW Westport Dr., Topeka, Kansas 66614.
