Lee Ann “Lee” (Holthaus) Kidney of Auburn, KS passed away peacefully on March 8, 2024 at Midland Care Hospice House in Topeka, KS.

Lee was born July 30, 1956, in Sabetha, KS, to Reva Engelken Holthaus and Leo Holthaus. She attended school in Baileyville and St. Benedict, KS and graduated from B&B High School in 1974. She attended college at Cloud County Community College and Kansas State University, graduating with a degree in Psychology.

For 23 years, Lee worked at The Menninger Clinic. She spent the majority of this time working in the Children’s Hospital. She also managed a group care facility while at Menninger. Continuing her work in caring for others, Lee also managed Pennsylvania Place, a care facility for the intellectually disabled in Holton, KS. From 2007 - 2010, Lee worked at the Kansas Blind School helping teach daily living skills to those with visual impairments. Throughout her entire career, she loved and advocated for all those entrusted to her care. She had a special passion for helping and advocating for those with mental illness. She was known for her infectious laugh and larger than life personality. She brought so much joy into the lives of those lucky enough to know her.

Lee married Jim Kidney on August 24, 1996 in Estes Park, CO. He survives of the home. They enjoyed many years of fun and adventures together, especially in Colorado. Jim was a faithful spouse, friend, caregiver and fierce advocate for Lee throughout their lives together.

Lee was proceeded in death by her grandparents, Margaret & Andrew Engelken, and Rose & Francis Holthaus, her parents, Reva Holthaus and Leo Holthaus, her brothers-in-law, Larry Rilinger and Mike Kidney as well as many aunts and uncles.

Lee is also survived by her two bonus children through Jim, Tyler (Anna) Kidman, Minneapolis, MN and Blair (Todd) Day of Raymore, MO, and grandchildren, Cece Kidman, Vivian Day and Fitz Day. She is also survived by her bonus mom, Judy Robinson and brother-in-law, Bryan (Jodi) Kidney and sister-in-law, Tina (Bob) Schindler.

She is also survived by her step mother, Nikki Holthaus, brothers, Allan (Vickie) Holthaus, Ron (Virginia) Holthaus, Fred (Susan) Holthaus, Les (Janet) Holthaus, Howard (Doris) Holthaus, Steve Holthaus, Troy (Teresa) Holthaus, sisters, Debbie Rilinger, Janet (Sam) Samson, Lisa Sanchez and Lindsey (Chadd) Ohlman, uncle, Clarence (Lillian) Engelken, and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and cousins.

Lee greatly loved all animals, but especially loved dogs. She had an extraordinary ability to communicate with all dogs and never met a dog she didn’t love. The pack waiting to greet her as she entered eternal life were her beloved dogs Artie, Friday, Moonshine, Peaches, Patch, Bo, Buck, Mercy, Dexter and Cosmo.

Lee will be cremated under the direction of Dove Cremations and Funerals Southwest Chapel. A Celebration of Life will be July 27, 2024 at 10:30 a.m. at Auburn Christian Church, 1351 N. Washington Auburn, Kansas 66402.
