Clayton H. Hammes, 81, of Topeka, passed away Thursday, March 21, 2024.

He was born May 10, 1942, in Baileyville, Kansas, the son of Leonard H. and Anna M. (Niekamp) Hammes. He graduated from St. Benedict High School in St. Benedict, Kansas. He served in the Army from 1963 to 1969.

Clayton was employed as a warehouseman by Goodyear for 38 years, retiring in 2001.

Clayton was a member of the American Legion, of Topeka.

Clayton married Patricia A. Rettele on August 22, 1964 in Seneca, KS. She survives, along with his sons Gregory Hammes (Ginger) of Uniontown, Ohio and Michael Hammes of Topeka; grandchildren Clayton J. Hammes and Catherine R. Hammes; and his sister, Nancy Uphaus.

Clayton enjoyed woodworking.

Clayton was cremated. A memorial mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, March 27th at Mother Teresa of Calcutta Catholic Church, 2014 NW 46th Street in Topeka. Interment of the cremated remains will follow at Prairie Home Cemetery in Topeka, Kansas. Memorial contributions may be made to Midland Care, 200 SW Frazier Circle, Topeka, KS 66606.
