In Memory Of
Marcia Scott Groth
1937 - 2024
She was born February 20, 1937, in Topeka, Kansas, the daughter of Rex and Edna (Spickerman) Scott. She graduated from Topeka High School, received a bachelor’s degree in microbiology from the University of Kansas and earned a master’s degree in education from Kansas State University.
Marcia began her career as a high school science teacher in Meriden, Kansas. She later taught at Auburn and Washburn Rural High School. After teaching, Marcia began a second career as a computer programmer working for Burlington Northern Santa Fe, Sprint and the State of Kansas. She was an active member of Trinity Presbyterian Church of Topeka for over 50 years.
Marcia married William “Bill” Dean Groth in 1962 at Potwin Presbyterian Church of Topeka. He preceded her in death on October 3, 2014, after 52 years of marriage. She was also preceded in death by her parents. Survivors include Bill and Marcia’s children Scott Groth (Lisa) of Shawnee, KS, Stephan Groth (Sarah) of Coos Bay, OR and Jeanne Winter (James) of Lecompton, KS; and their grandchildren Cameron Winter, Amanda Winter, Maylee Winter, Isabel Groth, Analise Miller, Aunika Miller, and Alissa Miller; and her dog Lulu.
Marcia loved spending time with friends and family. She enjoyed traveling, bridge, running, tennis and golf. She was active in PEO, Toastmasters and the Lake Sherwood sailing and golf clubs. Marcia and Bill also shared a mutual love of traveling, across the country and around the globe.
Marcia had a spirit full of life. She loved being with friends and if you were in a group or a club or just in a regular space with her, you were her friend. For Marcia, all groups were social. A tennis group would soon become a Thursday dinner group; a group of dog park regulars would become a lunch group; an exercise group, voila, a coffee group. Golf, tennis, running: for Marcia it was always about people.
Marcia loved deeply and was deeply loved.
A memorial service is planned for Monday, April 1, 2024, at 3pm at Trinity Presbyterian Church. The family will greet one hour prior to the service.
Memorial contributions may be made to Trinity Presbyterian Church, 4746 SW 21st Street, Topeka, KS 66604 or to the YMCA of Topeka, 3635 SW Chelsea Dr, Topeka, KS 66614.
Dove Cremations and Funerals Southwest Chapel is assisting the family.
