In Memory Of
Ferne A. Lutz
1928 - 2024

Ferne Lutz, 95, of Topeka, passed away early in the morning of Thursday, May 30th, 2024 at home surrounded by family.

She was born October 8, 1928, in Valley Falls, Kansas, the daughter of Leon F. and Agnes (Housh) Counts. She graduated from Valley Falls High School in 1946.

Ferne spent most of her career in Construction Supply Sales, working at Knox Supply, White Star Machinery, R&K Supplies, and Martin Tractor. She had a strong work ethic and never really retired.

Ms. Lutz was a member of the Women in Construction Group.

Ferne married Charles “Sam” Lutz on November 13, 1946 in Topeka; they later divorced. Survivors include her children Gregory Lutz of Topeka; daughters-in-law Pat Lutz of Oklahoma and Deana Lutz of Cleveland; grandchildren, Brett Lutz (Melissa) of Chicago, Trent Lutz of Portland, OR, Aleah Bass of Topeka, Lyndsey Craney (Jacob) of Topeka, Tad Peet of Perry, KS, Marni Licursi of Cleveland, OH, Robin Flager of Indiana, Chad Lutz of Topeka and Aime Sweet-Robinson of Lawrence; and several great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother Dale Counts of Washington; and her children Brad Lutz, Bruce Lutz, and Kerrie Roberts.

Anyone who had the pleasure of knowing “Fernie Belle”, would say she was a one of a kind lady! She loved deeply and didn’t know a stranger. Ferne was known for helping others and lead a life of service. She was ornery and had a great sense of humor. She enjoyed gardening, and planting flowers. She liked to find a good bargain at garage sales and adding to her treasures! In her later years, she was active in watching her great grandchildren’s sporting events.

Ferne was cremated. A memorial reception will be held on Friday, June 21st from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Dove Cremations and Funerals Southwest Chapel, 3700 SW Wanamaker Road in Topeka. Interment will be on Saturday, June 22nd at 10:00 a.m. at Rose Hill Cemetery in Valley Falls, Kansas. Memorial contributions may be made to Midland Care, 200 SW Frazier Circle, Topeka, KS 66606 or the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, P.O. Box 91891, Washington, DC 20090.
