1932 - 2016

Richard Max “Dick” Leupold, 83, of Topeka, Kansas passed away January 9, 2016 at his home surrounded by his wife and all his children.

He was born June 2, 1932 to William and Marguerite (Tolbert) Leupold in Tecumseh, Kansas. Dick graduated from Highland Park High School in 1950. During that time he worked for his uncle, Gus Leupold on the farm and at the Topeka Gun Club as Head Trap boy. After High School he worked in the sheet metal business installing duct work.

In 1952, Dick enlisted in the Air Force where he became an Air Traffic Control Tower Operator. While he was at Lowry Air Force in Denver, Colorado he met and married Patricia R. Canny. He was Honorably Discharged in Aug 1956 and they moved back to Tecumseh so his wife could be near his folks while he attended the National Air Traffic Control Academy in Oklahoma City. Upon graduation, they moved to Park Forest, Illinois where Dick was in the first group of controllers to staff the newly started Chicago EnRoute Center, based at Midway Airport, Chicago, Illinois. In 1962, they moved to the Oswego, Illinois area so he could work at the newly constructed, permanent facility for the Chicago Center in Aurora, Illinois. Dick officially retired in 1982. During his time at ZAU (Chicago Center), he was an Air Traffic Controller (West High), a Computer Automation Specialist, and a Team Supervisor. After his retirement, he taught automation for a few years at the Air Traffic Control Academy in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

In 1985, Dick married Delores Aaron and spent the next 30 years of their lives together in Kansas, spending much of their time boating, fishing and gardening.

Dick is survived by his wife, Delores (Dee) nee Aaron of Topeka; the mother of his children Pat (Glenn) Reynolds, Trenton, OH; his sister, Billie Vaughan, Jackson, WI; his three daughters, Terri Leefers, Dunedin, FL, Cindy (Norm) Lippelt, Aurora, IL and Patrice (Petey) Leupold, Chicago, Il; his two sons, Scott (Laura) Leupold, Brumley, MO and Rick Leupold, Tucson, AZ; step-son, Roy (Jaque) Campbell; his granddaughters, Leslie, Kara, Kelly, Kari, Hannah, Maggie, Leann, Kassie, Brittany, and Marissa; step-grandson, Cliff; great-granddaughter, Maddie, and great-grandson, Kolby; his special four legged friend, Sophie and many nieces and nephews.
