Herman Reichwein Simon
1927 - 2016

Herman Reichwein Simon, 88, died peacefully June 7, 2016, at Midland Hospice House in Topeka, KS, surrounded by the love of his family.

He was born July 15, 1927, in Bogota, New Jersey, the son of Herman Ernst Gustav Simon and Elsie Reichwein, first generation German immigrants.

He attended Teaneck High School in northern New Jersey and served his country as a Marine in World War II. He returned home and attended Bucknell University in Lewisburg, PA, where he earned a degree in Chemical Engineering in 1951. Herm played center and linebacker on the football team and was elected president of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity as a senior.

He married Mary Ella Triplet on September 15, 1951, and they reared three sons, Peter, David and Kurt.

Herman built the first home the family lived in. He spent nights, weekends, holidays and vacations for two years to erect the house he personally designed. The home still stands today, almost sixty years later, and looks better than ever.

He moved the family in 1967 to Sao Paulo, Brazil, where he taught a Brazilian engineer how to run a food processing plant. The family to this day recounts stories from their two years in such an exotic location.

The crown jewel in his business career occurred in Topeka, Kansas, where he led a landmark worker empowerment program in a pet food plant that has been written about and studied for more than two decades. He was also part of a team that earned a patent for freeze dried coffee.

In addition to a successful career, Herman was passionate about servant leadership. He was elected to the local school board in Kankakee, IL, in 1973. The family moved to Topeka, Kansas in 1976, where he served in the role of president for the Greater Topeka Chamber of Commerce, Boys and Girls Club of Topeka, YMCA and Topeka County Club. The Boys and Girls Club awards an annual scholarship in his name. He was actively involved in SCORE, an organization dedicated to helping startup entrepreneurs meet the challenges of beginning a new business.

He married Fulva Seufert on April 23, 2005, following the death of Mary Ella in August of 2003.

Herman’s interests and activities included football, gardening, tennis, traveling, golf, Bridge and sailing. His standard response to “How are you?” was, without fail, “Super.” His sense of humor was broad and deep. He was affectionately known as “The Herminator” by friends and family and as, “Herm the Hacker” on the golf course.

He was engaged with his church, St. David’s Episcopal of Topeka, where he was active on the vestry, participated in a Men’s Study and Fellowship group, and donated generously.

Herman is survived by his wife Fulva, his son Peter, daughter-in-law Pat and their two children Jessica and Rucker; son David, daughter-in-law Debbie and their three children, Reilly, Kirby and Skyler; son Kurt, daughter-in-law Nancy and their two children, Kelly and Erik, step-son Scott and his wife Donna of Jacksonville, Oregon, as well as countless friends.

Herman was preceded in death by his parents, wife Mary Ella and sister Elsie.

The family expresses gratitude to Midland Hospice House and Brewster Rehab in Topeka, Kansas, for their loving and gentle care at the end of his life. We extend special thanks to Deacons Annie Hedquist, Harry Craig, Mother Betty Glover and the entire St. David’s faith family.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on June 30th, at St. David’s Episcopal Church, 3916 SW 17th St, Topeka, KS 66604.
